Fitness in the Parks Starts on June 30

Independent Health and the Jamestown Area YMCA, along with support from the City of Jamestown and the Village of Lakewood, have teamed up to offer Fitness in the Parks – a FREE weekly community exercise program designed to encourage healthy activity.

If you’ve ever wished you could attend a fitness class outside during the summer so you don’t have to trade good weather for a good workout – now you can!

Layout 1Anyone can get out and get moving during the summer months with free, outdoor fitness classes led by YMCA-certified instructors at a park near you.

Allen Park

Zumba® – Mondays, 5:30 p.m.
Tai Chi – Wednesdays, 10:00 a.m.

Hartley Park (Lakewood Beach)

Pilates – Tuesdays, 6:30 p.m.
Bootcamp – Thursdays, 9:30 a.m.

American Heart Month Tips

newsletter cover photo heart February is American Heart Month, and as a leading nonprofit dedicated to improving the nation’s health and well-being, the Jamestown Area YMCA offers the following tips to help families in Chautauqua County be heart healthy.

Get Physical

Being physically active every day is fun and can improve the function of your heart. Plan and schedule opportunities for active play; for example, include a brisk 10-minute trip around the block after meals or a 10-minute walking break during the day. If your family enjoys active video games, select versions that require moving the body’s large muscle groups while playing.

Take a Snooze

Lack of sleep has been associated with elevated cholesterol and blood pressure. Adults need at least seven, but no more than nine hours of sleep at night to aid with the prevention of heart disease. Children need 10-12 hours of sleep per night.

Shape Up Those Recipes

Makeover your family’s favorite recipes by reducing the amount of salt and saturated fat and substituting a lower fat food (for example low-fat yogurt instead of sour cream) can make a recipe healthier without sacrificing taste.

Feeling the Pressure

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lowering or maintaining normal blood pressure can greatly reduce your risk for heart disease and stroke. Nearly 1 in 3 adults (about 67 million people) has high blood pressure and more than half of them don’t have it under control. Get your blood pressure checked regularly and discuss the results with you doctor.

Play Together

Spending time together as a family is a great way to reduce stress, which is important to heart health. Make homemade valentines for your children’s classmates or build a snow fort together in the yard or the park.

SilverSneakers® Classic

Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activity for daily living skills.  Hand-held weights, balls and elastic tubing with handles are offered for resistance and a chair is used fo rseated and/or standing support. 
Days/Times:  Monday & Wednesdays at 9:25 a.m.

ActivTrax is a total wellness system that provides sound guidance on exercise, weight loss, and nutrition.  It is a tool that creates customized workouts around your goals.  Hurry in – it’s currently free for all YMCA members.

SilverSneakers® Splash

Ages: Adults
Activate your aqua exercise urge for variety. SilverSneakers® Splash offers lots of fun and shallow water moves to improve agility, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance. No swimming ability is required, and a special SilverSneakers® kickboard is used to develop strength, balance, and coordination. Bring a water bottle and water shoes. Mondays 10:40 a.m.

Personal Training

Ages: 12 and older
If you aren’t getting the results you want working out on your own, try personal training. Trainers are here to help you meet your fitness objectives. Your trainer will design a program just for you that focuses on your unique goals.  Must be a YMCA member.

Massage therapy spans a wide variety of therapeutic approaches which work to improve an individual’s health and well-being through manipulation of muscles and other soft tissues of the body.  Available only at the Jamestown YMCA.

Man In The Mirror/Men of Meditation

This is a men’s group that meets for fellowship and bible study.  Discussion items revolve around men’s issues from a Christian perspective.  This is open to all men (YMCA members or not) and is a great way to engage in thought provoking Christian study. The groups meet on the third Thursday every month at 12 noon to 1 p.m. at the Jamestown YMCA.

Group Exercise Classes

Ages: 14 and older

Add a dose of high energy and motivation to your workouts with group exercise classes. Our dynamic classes are a fun and alternative to traditional workouts. Classes include 
Active Older Adult Exercise,  Cardio Kickboxing, Pilates, Power Pump, Silver Sneakers®, Bootcamp, High Intensity Circuit, Water Exercise, Stability Ball, Yoga, Zumba®, Aqua Zumba®, Zumba® Toning, and Cycle Hollyloft.

I Am Second

Ages:  Open to teens and adults
When:  First Thursday of every month at 6 pm at the Jamestown YMCA
I am Second is a movement meant to inspire people of all kinds to live for God and others.
Although it is a Christian program, it is for the average, everyday person.  Join us to hear
stories of both local and national people who have tried to go it alone and have failed.
Find the hope, peace and fulfillment they found.
