Healthy Kids Day 2014
Keeping Kids’ Minds and Bodies Active
To kick-start physical activity and learning now and throughout the summer – a critical out-of-school time for kids – on Saturday, April 26, the Jamestown YMCA is celebrating Healthy Kids Day® with a free community event for kids and families. YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, the Y’s national initiative to improve families’ health and well-being, features games, contests, giveaways, activities and more to motivate and teach families how to develop a healthy routine at home.
Joining the YMCA for Healthy Kids Day are: Bob Evans, CASAC, Chautauqua County Early Intervention, Chautauqua Striders, Chautauqua Tapestry, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Five Star Urgent Care, Girl Scouts, Infinity, James Prendergast Library, Jamestown Audubon, Jamestown Savings Bank Arena, Nutrition Zone, Salvation Army, TJ Maxx, WIC, and more!
The YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day will focus on health and education to ensure fewer children are at an increased risk for childhood obesity and more children succeed in school. During summer, research shows that kids are more likely to gain weight and fall behind academically than during the school year. Healthy Kids Day is not just a single day of fun, active play and learning – it’s a kick off to helping parents get a jump on creating a healthier summer.
In celebration of YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, the Y offers the following tips to help families develop healthy habits:
- High Five the Fruits and Veggies – Make sure kids get at least five servings a day, the minimum number nutritionists recommend to maintain healthy childhood development.
- Foster an Early and Onging Passion for Books – Read to and with your kids. Help children read at every age and every stage of their development.
- Team Up for Athletic Events – Set a family goal of great health by teaming up for community or charity events like races, walks, fun runs. Bike rides, etc.
- Volunteer Together – Find a cause that matters to the kids. Open their eyes to a world beyond themselves and the rich rewards that come from making a difference.
- Lead By Example – Be a good role model – kids can be influenced by seeing how hard their parents work at home or on the job, and how rewarding that experience is.

American Heart Month Tips
February is American Heart Month, and as a leading nonprofit dedicated to improving the nation’s health and well-being, the Jamestown Area YMCA offers the following tips to help families in Chautauqua County be heart healthy.
Being physically active every day is fun and can improve the function of your heart. Plan and schedule opportunities for active play; for example, include a brisk 10-minute trip around the block after meals or a 10-minute walking break during the day. If your family enjoys active video games, select versions that require moving the body’s large muscle groups while playing.
Take a Snooze
Lack of sleep has been associated with elevated cholesterol and blood pressure. Adults need at least seven, but no more than nine hours of sleep at night to aid with the prevention of heart disease. Children need 10-12 hours of sleep per night.
Shape Up Those Recipes
Makeover your family’s favorite recipes by reducing the amount of salt and saturated fat and substituting a lower fat food (for example low-fat yogurt instead of sour cream) can make a recipe healthier without sacrificing taste.
Feeling the Pressure
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lowering or maintaining normal blood pressure can greatly reduce your risk for heart disease and stroke. Nearly 1 in 3 adults (about 67 million people) has high blood pressure and more than half of them don’t have it under control. Get your blood pressure checked regularly and discuss the results with you doctor.
Spending time together as a family is a great way to reduce stress, which is important to heart health. Make homemade valentines for your children’s classmates or build a snow fort together in the yard or the park.

Free 8th Grade YMCA Memberships
Yes – you read it right! The Jamestown and Lakewood YMCAs are offering free school-year memberships for all 8th graders that live in Chautauqua County from September through June. Registering is easy – stop by either YMCA with your parent/guardian, school schedule and identification and you are all set to put fun and play into your day at the YMCA! Spread the word to your friends and family!
