In
Chautauqua
County
, Steps to a HealthierNY is working to help
residents live longer, healthier, better lives
in a variety of settings.
The Community on the
Move grant program is a way for communities
to create an environment which makes it easy to
be physically active." Funding for the
awards was provided by the Steps to a
HealthierNY program and a collaborative grant
with the Jamestown YMCA from the YMCA of the
USA. Previous
recipients have built paved walking paths in
their parks, bridges for walking trails, and
made safety enhancements.
In February of 2008, nine communities in
Chautauqua
County
were awarded $3,000 each for the Community
on the Move grant. Each community will
complete their environmental change and conduct
a physical activity program. The following
communities were awarded Community on the Move grants: City of
Dunkirk
,
Village
of
Westfield
, Chautauqua Rails to Trails,
Village
of
Brocton
, Downtown
Jamestown
Development Corporation, Jamestown City Parks
Department, Town of
Pomfret
, Village of Fredonia Parks Department, and
Village
of
Cassadaga
.
Another
area of achievement has been the relationships
built with school districts throughout the
county. Districts
have formed School Health Advisory Councils
(SHAC), completed the School Health Index (SHI),
and drafted Wellness Policies to address
physical activity and nutrition in the school
setting. With
14 districts in
Chautauqua
County
having completed the SHI and more than ten
districts receiving Board of Education support
for the local wellness policy, Steps is well on
the way to improving health and wellness in
local schools.
Other
exciting things are happening in worksites
throughout the county.
15 have formed wellness committees,
completed a self-assessment called the Heart
Check, and written policies to address physical
activity, nutrition, or tobacco use.
These worksites engage in other
components of the Steps program including
tobacco cessation and
America
on the Move.
Another way to reach residents where they
spend a great deal of their time!
With
interventions occurring in the community,
schools, and worksite settings, the Steps
program is reaching
Chautauqua
County
residents where they live, work, play, and pray.
